Consists of two islands, Sand and Eastern. A naval battle fought here during World War II resulted in a decisive victory for the United States, and which was considered a turning point in the war. The U.S. Navy no longer has any use for Midway as a base and it is now under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish & Wildlife Service. The only law enforcement officer on the island now is one Fish & Wildlife Refuge Officer. Only about 35 FWS staff, contractors and volunteers live on the island now.
