JOHNSTON ATOLL

This tiny island was used as a U.S. military base since before World War II. It is located 717 miles Southwest of Honolulu, Hawaii. Most recently the Johnston Atoll Base was used to store and destroy chemical weapons. It has been turned over to the U.S. Interior Department in the year 2004, and has become a wildlife refuge. There are no people living on the island, hence there is no law enforcement except for occasional visit by a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Refuge Officer.
